Museums & Information - National Holidays & Feasts
In Athens, Piraeus, the suburbs and environs, are a multitude of important museums and archaeological sites. The list below includes a selection of museums.

The Acropolis is open: In Winter: From Nov 1st to March 31st: 08:30-15:00 - In Summer: 08.00-19.00
Acropolis entrance ticket: 12 euros per person

The Acropolis ticket can be used for a few days (7-8 days) after its purchase for more archaeological sites, which are quoted on the Acropolis ticket itself (Roman Market, Ancient Agora, Temple of Zeus, Kerameikos, Dionysos sanctuary). You can buy this ticket at any of the five archaeological places you visit first and use it for the Acropolis too.

The Temple of Poseidon is open daily from 10am until sunset. The last entry is 20 min before closing.
Sounio entrance Ticket: 5 euros per person

Ancient Corinth is open: In Winter: 8am-3pm In Summer: 8am-5pm Ancient Corinth entrance ticket: 7euros

Closed on Holidays: Jan 1st, March 25th, May 1st, Oct 28th, Christmas and Boxing Day. Good Friday: open from 12noon to 3pm. Holy Saturday: 08.30-3pm Easter Sunday: closed Easter Monday: 08.30-3pm

*Students of non-European Union countries holders of an international student card are entitled to 50% discount on the entrance fee. Young people up the age of 18 are entitled to free admission. European Union students are entitled to free entrance while European Union senior citizens over 65 have 50% discount on entry to all Greek museums and archaeological sites.

Argolis
Tickets:
  • Ancient Corinth: 6 euros including the museum

Delphi
The archaeological site of Delphi is open, In Winter: From Nov 1st to March 31st: 08:30-15:00 In Summer: From April 1st to Oct 31st: 08:00-19:00

General information
Greece is located in south-eastern Europe and has a population of approx. 11,262.000 people. 

Athens is located in the Attica prefecture, in particular in the Attica basin, which is encompassed by Mount Aegaleo, Mount Parnitha, Mount Penteli and Mount Hymettos.  Athens, the suburbs and the neighbouring town of Piraeus constitute an urban entity (greater urban complex of the capita) with a population of about 4 million residents.

Currency:  The national currency of Greece since January 1, 2001, is the euro.  You can exchange currency at the airport, at private currency exchanges and banks.
Dialling Code:  The international dialling code of Greece is +30.

Time Zone:  Athens time is seven hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, and one hour ahead of Central European Time.
Climate:  Athens has a mild climate, with sunshine more than 260 days a year.

National Holidays
The following is a list of official holidays, during which all departments of public services are closed:
  • January 1- New Year's Day.
  • January 6 - Epiphany. Consecration of the waters in the Piraeus area. The Cross is cast in the sea and young men dive in to retrieve it.
  • Shrove Monday, first day of Lent (movable) - in Greek is known as 'Clean Monday'. 41 dyas before Easter. The commencement of Lenten fasting. On Shrove Monday Greeks fly kites, fast and celebrate the Shrove Monday feast. Athenians gather mainly at Philopappou Hill and other high grounds.
  • March 25 – Independence Day and Annunciation. Anniversary of the revolution for freedom against the Turkish invaders, Military parade.
  • Good Friday (movable). Good Friday to Easter Bank Holiday. On Good Friday in the afternoon churches decorate an epitaph. The procession of the Epitaph is joined by people holding candles and singing psalms on the streets of every town and village in the country.
  • Resurrection: Celebration with fireworks and flares at midnight, on the eve of Easter.
  • Easter Sunday, Easter Monday (movable): According to custom, on Easter Day, Greeks eat spited lamb. The festivities include music and dancing.
  • May 1- May Day: A multitude of flower shows in Athens.
  • Of the Holy Spirit (movable).
  • August 15 - Dormition of Virgin Mary.
  • October 28 - anniversary of Greece's refusal to submit to the Italians in 1940, Military parade.
  • December 25 - Christmas Day.

Other Traditional Holidays:
Carnival: Carnival festivities of 3 weeks duration, ending on Shrove Monday. In Athens the main Carnival festivities are held in Plaka.
Wine Feast: Organised by a multitude of municipalities.
Nautical Week: Celebrated in Phaliron.
Pentecost: Celebrated 50 days after Easter..
